Uninsured Motorists insurance is insurance that provides you with coverage for property damage and/or bodily injury in the event you are injured in an accident that was the fault of an uninsured driver.

Under West Virginia law, you have to buy a minimum amount of uninsured motorists coverage. That minimum limit is now $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage (“25/50/25”). However, your insurance company is required to make a “commercially reasonable” offer uninsured coverage up to the limits you have selected for your liability coverage. The offer is typically made through a form that gives various options for uninsured limits, and the price of each option.

If you have not reviewed your automobile policy and given careful consideration to how much Uninsured Motorists (“UM”) coverage you have, you may want to talk with your agent. In most cases, it makes sense to have Uninsured Motorists coverage up to the same amount of your liability limits. Remember – this is coverage that will provide money for your injury and property damage if an uninsured driver hits you. Without it – or with very little coverage – you may be left with the burden of the medical bills, lost wages and other expenses that come from an accident
